The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was originally planted in 1847 by Joseph Gilbert using some of the first vines brought into Australia. In 1961 Wyndham Hill Smith (of the Hill Smith family behind Yalumba) was asked to jointly develop the vineyard together with Geoff Angas-Parsons. The aim was to produce "delicate Rieslings in the Germanic style". The Contours Riesling is the flagship wine and the grapes are selected from the oldest vines planted in 1962 and only released after a minimum of 5 years of bottle ageing. The result is a fantastic expression of Riesling, still young and with a long life ahead of it with characteristic flavours of lime and citrus, perfectly balanced and very complex. Since the first release of the 1995 vintage it has won numerous trophies around the world, lastly the Decanter World Wine Award for best Riesling above £10.
