Massolino Wines
We had the pleasure of enjoying the company of Franco Massolino as he showed us around the Massolino estate. We were very impressed with the attention to detail and quality apparent in everything being done and the superb location of the vineyards. The Massolino estate has been in the family since 1896 and today has 15 hectares of vineyards around the picturesque village of Serralunga d'Alba.
Since 1994 the style of the wines has undergone a subtle transformation. Winemaker Franco Massolino has done a wonderful job of marrying change with a respect for tradition, something which sets him apart from most of the younger producers in Barolo today. This is in part dictated by the nature of the great vineyards that the Massolino family owns in the commune of Serralunga d’Alba – the source of some of the greatest, most structured, robust and long-lived Barolos.
The quality of the wines stems from a combination of the meticulous work carried out in the vineyard and the work in the wine cellar which is just as precise. Franco Massolino has introduced judicious use of smaller oak barriques for some of the crus whereas the straight Barolo is aged solely in traditional large oak barrels. This gives a range of styles in Barolo that are very distinct and all excellent examples as evidenced by the accolades they receive from all over the world including Wine Spectator, Decanter World Wine Awards and the famed Tre Bicchieri.
The view over the vineyards from the wine cellars is superb, as Jancis Robinson once commented on the vineyards of Piemonte it is a wonder that they get any work done at all. On top of this the food is also superb and and Piemonte is a region well worth a visit - do contact us if you are planning on going and we will be happy to share some of our tips.
Barolo may be the "king of wines and the wines of kings" and the wines of Massolino are certainly fit for a king and all us other mortals.
