Wines from Kim Crawford

Kim Crawford Kim Crawford Wines company was one of New Zealand’s first “virtual wineries” started in 1996: Grapes were sourced from growers, the wine was made at other wineries and sales, marketing and admin managed from their central Auckland home. They had no name from an estate or specific vineyard and therefore they simply called it Kim Crawford. Along with serious winemaking and good wine, the intention to have fun, explore new boundaries and stay in touch with their wine consumers has always been of the utmost importance. There is a widely held belief at this winery that a happy working environment is transferred to the bottle ... you can almost taste it! One industry observer comments: “They are a formidable pair, Kim’s skill is inside the bottle in the wine, Erica’s is on the outside in brand image and marketing.” The Kim Crawford label is now well-recognised in some of the world’s most sophisticated markets. In less than a decade, it’s come from nowhere to an envied position as New Zealand’s tenth largest label in terms of global sales and fourth largest in terms of sales to the United States.

Kim Crawford's involvement with wine making is impressive. He worked before starting his own winery for Coopers Creek which is one of our other most favourite New Zealand wines we list. Kim Crawford's very impressive career cumulated in 1994 with "Best New Zealand Winemaker of the Year", which was repeated in 1996 and a first in NZ. From then onwards the medals and awards are too numerous to mention. The Tietjen Gisborne Chardonnay was the first to receive a gold medal in the Royal Easter Show in New Zealand followed by medals at the National Australian Show with also a gold medal for the Dry Riesling. as you can see from the long list of wines here that was just the beginning. Another milestone was reached in 2000 when Kim and Erica Crawford purchased Comely Bank Vineyard together with the Hammonds in Marlborough’s cool Waihopai Valley.

Kim Crawford

The first time we encountered Kim Crawford was year's before AdVintage Wines was established and I (Marleen) decided there and then that the Dry Riesling was to be one of my favourite white wines and it has never changed. Apart from the really balanced and fantastic palate of the wines a lot of thought goes into the naming of their wines. Kim prefers to source his grapes from small, select vineyards, where, he believes, the best vines are to be found. Wine lovers can judge the good sense of this approach whenever they sample Kim’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Rise-and-Shine Creek Central Otago Pinot Noir or Gisborne Tietjen Chardonnay. Here are two examples of successful Small Parcel wines we list, SP Rise-and-Shine Creek Central Otago Pinot Noir 2006 which got a bronze medal at 2007 N-Z international Wine Show and a trophy champion Pinot Noir at 2007 Air N-Z award, and Spitfire SP Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 which got gold medal at 2007 and 2008 Royal NZ Easter Show.
